Why do I share more photos of smiling children than I do of hurting children?

One, I want these kids to be seen as children, not only as statistics of poverty—and I hope that their individuality and their real stories shine through what I share over their suffering. Sometimes I share photos that are heartbreaking because I feel they are important to enact change, but often the sight of a child who is smiling and healthy after receiving life-saving help is just as impactful! 

Secondly, as much as I want people to be aware of the extreme poverty in this world, I hope Kenya is known among my friends for more than its poverty. This country is striking in its geography, its people groups, and its heart. Kenya’s wildlife attracts visitors from all over the world. The continent of Africa is so much more than poverty—it is beautiful and has a rich depth of cultures, languages, animals, and people.

However, there is a whole lot more to Africa than poverty and I hope everyone who reads my stories knows that.
