Modest Trends: Prom Dresses (Part 1)

Prom is coming quickly.  I'm a high school senior this year, so I'm already keeping an eye out for the right dress.  Over the next few weeks, I'd like to share some cute prom dress styles that are also modest.  I'll share pictures of makeup and hair trends that should be popular this year.  Like I usually do, I'll also be sure to share some immodest prom dress trends that you should try to avoid when dress-shopping.

Today I'll talk about what's popular when it comes to the skirt of your dress.

Dramatic Ball Gown

This style of prom dress will never go out of style.  It's classic.

Look for a long, full skirt with plenty of ruffles.  Crystal and beaded embellishments are also nice touches.  Bright colors are very much in style this year, so look for colors like hot pink, fuschia, and teal.

I like the sheer sleeves for this dress.  They add a touch of modesty to what might look a little less modest as a sleeveless dress.

I found this hot pink prom dress for $147 from this link.

Ruffled Skirts

Ruffled skirts are definitely in style this year when it comes to prom dresses.  I think ruffles are cute.  Avoid ruffles on the sleeves or neckline, but instead try to focus on the skirt.

Long skirts seem to work best with ruffles.  Short ruffled skirts always seem to come too short on the knee and appear immodest.

I love this black and white ruffled skirt, especially matched with the sleek black heels and the necklace.  It's simpler than the dramatic ballgown style, but it still makes a statement.  It would also go well with a black silk shawl or jacket in cool weather.

Long and Sleek

Long gowns are trending this year, which I love.  Silk and satiny fabrics are "in."  Look for deeper colors like emerald and metallic grays.  Watercolor and floral patterns will also be in style this year.

Be careful with these dresses, however, because they tend to come with low cut fronts, high slits, and cut outs around the midriff areas.

Long and slinky dresses like these can also cling to your figure and become a bit too form-fitting to be considered modest.  If you're pear-shaped, you may want to be careful when choosing a sleek gown as they tend to accentuate the curves around your hip area.

I love the deep colors of this dress.  It's loose and flowing, but not too figure-hugging.  While I would appreciate more straps on the dress, at least it has one cute strap that conveniently covers up possible cleavage.  I couldn't find a proper link for this dress either, but you could easily go to your local J.C. Penney's or clothing store with a similar dress in mind.

Cocktail

I personally prefer to wear cocktail dresses for prom.  Shorter, knee-length dresses are less stuffy when you're on a crowded dance floor and you won't step on the hem.

When wearing a cocktail dress, be sure that the length isn't too short.  Try to keep your length at the knee.  Remember that when you sit down, the dress will seem shorter by a few inches, so anything above the knee will seem incredibly short once you sit down.

I like the look of this cocktail dress.  It's long and not too form-fitting.  If you don't feel comfortable wearing a strapless dress (like me), then you could easily go to a tailor and ask her to sew on simple black straps to help keep you looking more modest.

I found this dress for $149 at this website.  It even comes in five different colors.  Check it out.

Flouncy

Flouncy skirts are trending this year.  Sheer layered fabrics with a cinched waist and crystal embellishments seem to look the best.  I like this cute red dress with its flounces.  Its silky ribbon and cute Gerber Daisy go perfectly with the look.  You could easily find a tailor to sew straps onto the dress as well.

Your flouncy skirt can go down to the floor or cut off right below the knee; both styles are cute.  Bright colors are trending this year, in colors like hot pink, red, lime green, teal, and blue.

Add a pair of metallic ballet flats or neutral-colored kitten heels to match with your outfit.  Something else I think would go well with this look would be a brightly-colored flower in your hair.

  2. I like the cocktail dres best :)
It's kind of similar to the one I got for my ball, but the one I had had two little straps, and a bigger strap like on the 'long and sleek' but not so decorated [I could go on about that dress for hours, lol]
