Immodest Trends: Prom Dresses (Part 1)
Posted by Girls Only, Modesty and Style
| Filed underToday I'm going to share some tips of what to avoid when shopping for a prom dress. I'll also strive to find solutions to a super cute but immodest dress. Not all dresses can be fixed, but some can. I'll provide the immodest version of the dress on the left side of the page and the modest version on the right.
Slinky Gowns and Sheaths
What I like about most silk gowns is the fact that they're long, but just because a dress is long, that doesn't mean it's modest. When your dress hugs your curves too much, they become a distraction to the boys around you.
Do you want attention to be on your body or on your personality or even your face and hair and the dress itself?
While I think the dress to your left is cute, it's too tight and form-fitting for me to consider it modest.
Plus, I have to ask... how can you comfortably sit down in a dress that tight?
Instead of choosing tight silks gowns, instead choose a layered silk fabric that has pleats or ruffles so the dress won't hug your figure so tightly.
See the pleats and bows on the pink silk gown to your right? They detract from the model's curves and focus more on the prettiness of the dress.
Sheer Flounces
These are trending this year and while I can't help but admit that they're cute, they're simply too short to be modest.
These skirts remind me of ballerina tutus. They carry a flirtatious and graceful look about them. However, because of the flimsy material, the skirts don't exactly stay where they're supposed to say. When you bend over, the skirts flip up. And they're generally made to cut off at mid-thigh anyways.
While they're quite pretty, I sadly put them on the "Immodest Prom Dress" list.
If you like the flounces and sheer fabric, try a longer version, like the one to your right. While you may want to wear a shawl over this sleeveless dress, I love the flouncy skirt.
High Slits
According to what I've read so far, gowns with high slits are trending this year. The problem with these slits is that they aren't very modest. High slits that come up to mid-thigh will show off too much of your bare leg to the guys around you, especially when you sit down or dance.
Instead of choosing a gown with a high slit, try to choose a gown that will have several different layers of fabric. Even if they have a slit, like the one to your right, it will show a pretty silk slip instead of your bare thigh.
In my opinion, the style of the dress to your right is much more pretty and feminine anyways.
Tail Hems
These have only recently come into the spotlight, but most of the tail hemmed dresses I've found have been immodest. While the backs of your legs are covered, often the front of the dress comes high above your thighs, like in the picture to your left.
I love the sparkling silver and ruffles of that dress, but the front of the hem comes up too high.
On the other side of this page is another pretty silver dress. It has a tail hem, but the highest part of the hem only reaches about half an inch above the knee, which I find appropriate. Remember that when you sit down, your skirt will reach higher, so look for a more modest choice in tail hem like the one to your right.
Bubble Skirt
Personally, I think bubble skirts are cute. They add a nice embellishment and flounce to your dress and they keep your skirts from being too figure-hugging. However, most of the bubble skirts I see in stores and online tend to be too short to be modest, ending around the upper thigh area.
Do you see this adorable bubble dress to your left? If only it was a few inches longer. When this girl dances, walks, or even sits down, the dress is going to come even higher up her leg, while it's already a bit too high for my taste.
If you love the bubble look like I do, try something a little softer and longer, like the pretty purple dress to your right. It bubbles at the ends and has a pretty form, but it isn't as short as the other skirt.

I hope I've helped you out a little. Which of these styles is your favorite?
